Welcome to the Standard Map website. Here you will find a detailed description of one of the most widely-studied examples of dynamical chaos in physics, as well as a Java applet that lets you view the dynamics of the map yourself.

The Standard Map is a mathematical model that physicists use to understand and describe the phenomenon of chaotic motion.

Physicists use and study the Standard Map not only because it is interesting in its own right, but because it displays so many of the features of chaotic motion in a very straightforward fashion. Thus, when talking about other chaotic systems, physicists can refer to the Standard Map as a useful comparitive example.

Yet the Standard Map is very simple in its mathematics. By studying the map, one can can catch a glimpse of the barest conditions under which chaos can arise.
